Place the bed first
The bed is the anchor of the room, so position it before anything else. Ideally, set the headboard against a solid wall, with a clear view of the door but not directly in line with it. This feels stable and secure — a small thing that genuinely affects how settled you feel.
Allow walkways on both sides
If two people share the bed, leave space to get in and out on each side — around 60 cm minimum. For a single sleeper against a wall, keep at least one generous walkway clear.
Keep bedside tables within reach
Bedside tables should sit roughly level with the top of the mattress and close enough to reach a lamp or phone without stretching. Matching tables on both sides give a balanced, calming symmetry.
Position storage out of the path
Wardrobes and chests need clearance for doors and drawers to open fully. Place them where you won't bump into an open door, and avoid blocking windows or natural light.
Protect the calm
A bedroom sleeps best when it feels uncluttered. Keep work desks and exercise gear out if you can — the brain associates a tidy, single-purpose room with rest. If a desk must share the space, position it so it's out of sight from the bed.
Mind the light and air
Don't block windows with tall furniture. Good airflow and natural light make a bedroom feel fresh by day and help you wind down by night.
